What are your opinions on Dolores Umbridge?
What are some of your favourite scenes with the miserable old bag?

Opinions? You expect varied opinions about that old toad? I think any Potter fan would have pretty much the same veiw of her.

Love to hate her.
She was the necessary evil - she taught Harry to grow emotionally.

She was the necessary evil - she taught Harry to grow emotionally. Yes, I definately agree with that. You can see evidence of it throughout the book, that eventually he learns to think before acting and although it doesn't control him completely, it makes him aware of the situation.
I have this thing that what she taught him is going to help him in the final battle - some jumble of inner strength against the external demons.
I'm waffling.

I also love to hate her. She is an amazingly well written character and a sign of the pure genius of JK Rowling. It would have been hard to imagine such a repulsive character and I am so glad I have never had a teacher whose character even vaguely resembled that of Dolores Umbridge.
I love the scene when Fred and George left the school because it obviously made Umbridge furious. She was so exstatic to have a reason to punish them, but they slipped from her grasp just at the last moment.
I agree that she unconsciously helped Harry. One way in which she did this was to give him independance and to make him learn to stand up for himself and to find a way round problems. It was Umbridge's pathetic classes that prompted Harry to teach Defense. He really had to stand on his own two feet and not let her triumph over him.

I agree that she helped him, but not quite so directly. I think perhaps pushing him into forming Dumbledore's Army showed him how much talent he really had in that area. She also (as well as Fudge) showed Harry that not all good wizards are as good as a good wizard should be. Until the 4th and 5th books, there's this divide between good and evil- characters that who support Voldemort, characters who support Harry and Dumbledore. Umbridge almost rivals deatheaters in her evilness, but she's still not a supporter of the dark arts. She is, most certainly, the most evil character who is not on the dark side.
I have to say you're lucky andromeda- her type are not exactly few and far between.

I also agree with all of you. Her part in Harry's life was necessary. She helped make him stronger emotionally and physically. I think Umbridge made the book more interesting. I mean i hated her but she definately livened up the book alot!
